Fiery demise for storied structure | News | OnlineAthens.com.
In its architectural heyday, the original building at the corner of Lumpkin and Clayton streets was a grand piece of architecture. The brick structure, built in 1889 as a YMCA, rose three stories, complete with a dome-topped tower.
It’s all part of a long history that went up in flames and smoke Friday, along with memories of the Georgia Theatre, which was a landmark for the Athens music scene.
Hands down the best, most comprehensive reporting concerning the importance of this building to Athens.
Great job, Julie Phillips! Thank you.
